Simon Bird, Jessica Knappett, and The Inbetweeners Cast Weigh in on the Debate

The "Inbetweeners" Cast Weighs In

The cast of the popular British sitcom "The Inbetweeners" recently weighed in on the debate surrounding the show's portrayal of women.

In an interview with The Guardian, Simon Bird, who played Will McKenzie on the show, said that he believes the show's portrayal of women was "of its time," but that he would not make the same choices today.

“I think the show was a product of its time,” said Bird. “We were trying to make a funny show about teenage boys. We were trying to make you believe these teenagers. Part of that was playing up the misogyny because we were trying to make these characters as repellant as possible. It seems like a bit of a cop-out to say you were just reflecting the time but that’s what we were doing.”

Jessica Knappett, who played Lisa Cherry on the show, agreed with Bird, saying that she believes the show's portrayal of women was "problematic."

"I think the show was problematic in the way that it portrayed women," said Knappett. "I think it was a product of its time, but I think it's important to acknowledge that it wasn't a good portrayal of women."
